Earthquake!

Today was certainly an unforgettable experience for me. At around 8.25am, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit Hualien, sending aftershocks of magnitude 2 to Taipei.

The students in my class were very calm and well-organised during the earthquake, each performing a different safety measure orderly. Some students went to turn off all electricity appliances, others opened the classroom doors to ensure an open passage for evacuation, while the rest hid under their tables for safety.

As it was my first earthquake experience, I was nervous yet excited at the same time that I finally got a chance to experience how an earthquake is like. The students in Taiwan are really well-prepared when dealing with frequent natural disasters like earthquakes. My teacher and the students took the opportunity  to share with me some earthquake evacuation tips as well as their past earthquake experiences.

What a wonderful earthquake experience for me!

My class put up a musical performance during their music lesson today. Their performance encompassed everything they have learnt during their music lesson for the year. The students prepared solo, group and class items for their audience, which includes a variety of performances like singing, dancing, playing the recorder, and even solo piano pieces.

Dancing to the music

The students were told to invite their parents to attend the performance so that their parents get to know what they have learnt in school better. It was also a chance for them to show appreciation to their parents by singing a touching song titled 《母親您真偉大》.

Bowing before their song item starts

When their performance ended successfully, the students cheered happily as they have spent a lot of time practicing.

Many parents took the time off from work to specially attend this 1 hour musical performance. I was really touched by how involved the parents are in their child's school life and are very supportive of the school's efforts in fostering closer parent-child relationship.

A mother giving her son a pat on the head to show how proud she was of his performance.

I really like how students are given a chance to showcase what they have learnt during their music lessons and perform it in front of their parents. A successful musical performance really boosted the students' confidence in themselves, and I could see that the students genuinely enjoyed themselves during their performance.

Conclusion of Week One!

Finally it's FRIDAY! A tiring yet enriching week!
Things to highlight for the week!

Class 601 had their Social Studies Class at School discussion classroom, the table arrangement enables students to sit in a group of four, which is different from the normal classroom arrangement.

Students were having group presentation.601

Students were actively involved in group discussion during Chinese Class. Some of their ideas and opinions were really creative and critical! My CT also emphasis a lot on getting students to think independently.

The first lesson of every Friday is "分組課” whereby all students are free to choose courses they want to take, some of the courses: 閱讀,躲避球,跳繩,手工藝課,植物園賞鳥 etc etc My CT is in charge of 躲避球,they were so excited and we can tell from their happy faces that they were having so much FUNNN!!

"鄉土課”!學生可以學習閩南話 and 客家話~~

國文課其中一篇作文,老師讓學生寫小說,無字數限制。於是,我看到了這份滿滿16頁單面稿紙的作文!講述了兩兄弟的故事。自動自發地【16頁】!每個學生都寫了至少五頁的作文。而且題材豐富,有些想法與寫作手法非常突出。

學生小記!/Students' Diaries!

Early this morning, my CT gave me a pile of books and asked me to read through. At first, I thought it was a pile of workbooks for me to be familiarized with their style of teaching.

However, it turned out to be their daily diaries and guess what! A lot of them wrote about me! Yes, the students here are required to write a short essay everyday about anything they like and their form teacher will read through and comment on it, as a sort of teacher-student interaction!

This is indeed a good way of understanding different student and it also form a mutual trust between the students and teacher.

Below are some examples of their work! Only extracts though!

These entries really made my day! Reminds me the reasons behind the decision to be in this profession. Day 3 ends and looking forward to the follow days!

The Official First Day of School!

Today's Monday! Finally, what the three of us have been waiting for! The start of our practicum!

The day started off with morning flag raising at the podium area, where all the staff and students queued up orderly for their Monday routine. Their weekly routine starts off with singing of the National Anthem.

The staff and students all queued up for their National Anthem.

After which, Principal Yang started presenting awards such as the Most Well-Mannered Student Award and the Most Filial Piety Student Award.

During this morning assembly, there was a miniature skit presented by the Drama Club. This is in lieu with the value of the month.

Finally, Principal Yang introduced us to the whole school and Meijuan was given the chance to give a short speech.

After the morning assembly, the three of us followed our individual Cooperating Teachers back to our classrooms.

Here are some photos of my first day of school!

The class I am attached to! (Class 406)
On a side note, my CT hopes that I can start remembering the students' names by Thursday. So, I did a little seating plan, gave out worksheets and chit chat with the students in between lessons.

They are practicing calligraphy!

Today, I managed to sit in for their Arts lessons:

The smart board in the Arts room!

Look at the talented students!

So that concluded my first day of school! Looking forward to tomorrow!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was posted to a Primary 5 class (509) under the guidance of Mdm Hsu, a very experienced and patient teacher with more than 10 years of teaching experience. She is very willing to share her experiences with me and even gave me the task of helping her design a powerpoint presentation on Pompeii (The text she is currently teaching), as well as preparing a 5-10 minutes introduction to one of the Chinese classic poetry the students have been memorising during their silent reading by the end of this week.

I'm very glad to be given this opportunity so early into the teaching assistantship, and I hope that I am able to complete the tasks given well.

The students' lunch break in Taiwan is very different from our recess time or lunch hour in Singapore schools. Almost all the students eat the nutritious school meal provided. A few students will volunteer to help carry the food into the classroom, while the rest will wash their hands and utensil set they have brought from their homes.

Self-service school meal

Taiwanese students are taught to not talk while eating as a form of dining etiquette. This is also to prevent the spreading of viruses among students, making them sick. I was surprised at how disciplined the students were as they queued up neatly to get their food or when getting ready to walk to another venue for lessons, almost like an army of little soldiers!

The concept and habit of recycling has been instilled into the students as young as in primary school. After finishing their meals, they will sort their rubbish into different trash bags for recycling. Each student also has their own set of utensils to cut down on the usage of disposable utensils.

I believe that schools should encourage such practice to cultivate students' habit while they are young. Though it is only the first day of school, they have really impressed me with their disciplined meal routine and awareness for the environment.

What a wonderful start to my teaching assistantship!

I am posted to CLASS 601, with a group of lovely kids! what they impressed me the most was their good habit of reading. Almost every break, students would pick up a book and do their own reading. I could almost see their fascinated faces when they were reading! BOOKWORMS~ <3

《Coraline》 Neil Gaiman

Got a chance to read their diary, interesting writing by students and interest comments by Shi Lao Shi.

A good starting! O(∩_∩)O
